Lincoln County commissioners, including Kent Weems and Micaela Wuehler, recently met in Grand Island with power companies, water districts, and Governor Jim Pillen for the task force's inaugural meeting.
The primary focus of the task force is to determine how Nebraska should manage this development, particularly concerning its impact on power and water supplies. Commissioner Weems emphasized that while Lincoln County is open to hosting data centers, any agreements must include substantial benefits for local taxpayers, potentially in the form of property tax relief. Commissioner Wuehler highlighted the diverse nature of data centers, stressing that not all are hyperscale facilities and that careful planning and zoning regulations are essential to ensure their suitability for Lincoln County.
The task force is scheduled to convene again in Columbus on October 20th to continue its discussions on establishing state-level strategies and guidelines for data center development.
