Brick Township, New Jersey, is proactively moving to restrict data center development within its borders, even before any project proposals have been submitted. Mayor Lisa Crate and Council President Steve Feinman announced a proposed ordinance that defines data centers and prevents them from being categorized under existing land-use classifications, such as warehouses, offices, or utility facilities, unless specifically authorized by the township. The Township Council is slated to consider the ordinance on September 8.
Officials cited significant resident concerns regarding the potential impacts of data centers. Council President Feinman highlighted issues observed in other communities, including enormous energy and water consumption, environmental degradation, and constant noise. The proposed measure aims to eliminate zoning ambiguities and safeguard Brick's residents and environment by establishing clear regulations ahead of any development applications. If approved, the ordinance will take effect 20 days after its publication.
