Corpus Christi weighs new AI data center rules as Hut 8 expands Beacon Point
Corpus Christi is considering new regulations for future AI data centers, while Hut 8 announced a new long-term lease at its Beacon Point campus in Nueces County. Hut 8 states the expansion will not increase the campus's water or power demands and is expected to create 200 permanent jobs.
Hut 8 has secured another long-term lease at its Beacon Point AI campus in Nueces County, Texas, doubling its existing customer's commitment to 704 megawatts of contracted IT capacity for the 1-gigawatt campus. The company projects the facility, slated to open at full capacity by spring 2028, will create approximately 200 permanent jobs.
Simultaneously, the Corpus Christi City Council voted to initiate the development of stricter regulations for future data centers within the city. These proposed rules would not apply retroactively to Hut 8's Beacon Point campus, which company representative Miller believes is already well-positioned to meet the underlying objectives and standards identified publicly regarding land use, setbacks, water, power, and infrastructure. City staff have yet to formalize specific policy recommendations.
