Yorkville approves CyrusOne data center plan update
The Yorkville City Council approved an updated plan for the CyrusOne data center campus, which includes a $15 million impact payment for community groups, primarily for school construction. The revisions also entail a reduced number of buildings, changes to layouts, and more rigorous sound testing requirements for the project. Public comments raised concerns about noise and water use from data centers.
The Yorkville City Council recently approved an updated plan for the proposed CyrusOne data center campus located off Eldamain and Faxon roads. The revised agreement includes a significant $15 million impact payment, primarily designated for the Yorkville 115 School District to fund new school construction. This payment structure is consistent with similar impact payments negotiated for other data center projects in the area.
City Administrator Bart Olson confirmed that the majority of the $15 million lump sum, due at the time of the building permit, will go towards the school district. The council's vote also formalized physical changes to the campus design, resulting in one less building and modifications to the remaining building layouts. Additionally, the updated agreement mandates more stringent sound testing requirements for the CyrusOne project, aligning it with standards in place for other data center developments.
The CyrusOne data center project had initially received city approval approximately two years prior and is currently under construction. During the public comment session, several residents voiced concerns regarding potential noise pollution and water consumption associated with data centers.
