Aurora council advances restrictions on data centers in mixed-use zones
Aurora lawmakers unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit data centers in mixed-use office-institutional zones, where residential units may be located. The ordinance requires a second vote before taking effect, while the Trident data center project prepares another submission for review.
The Aurora City Council unanimously approved the first vote on an ordinance that would remove data centers as an allowed use in mixed-use office-institutional zoning areas. The change would prevent projects from being approved administratively in areas that may be adjacent to or include residential housing, and a second council vote is required before the restrictions take effect.
The action followed continued opposition from residents and public commenters who urged Aurora to restrict where data centers can be built or ban them entirely. Separately, the Trident data center project is expected to submit its plans for a fourth review by Oct. 26.
