The debate arises after the Department of Energy (DOE) issued emergency orders requiring the 39-year-old Stanton 1 coal plant, operated by Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC), to continue running until at least November 30. The DOE orders explicitly cite new data centers as the primary source of this increased electricity demand.
Critics, including Raymer Maguire of The CLEO Institute, argue that there is no genuine emergency necessitating continued coal use in Orlando. They contend that keeping the Stanton coal plant operational is costing OUC customers over $6 million monthly and contributing to significant air pollution. Maguire asserts that pausing or canceling plans for new data centers would undermine the DOE's justification for extending the coal plant's operation.
Instead of prolonged reliance on fossil fuels, advocates are urging City of Orlando and OUC leaders to rapidly expand solar and battery capacity, which currently accounts for only about 10% of the city's electricity supply. They point out that OUC has previously missed deadlines for retiring Stanton 1 and has recently disincentivized residential solar installations. Furthermore, OUC plans to convert Stanton 2, its other coal-fired unit, to natural gas next year, which critics say merely replaces one polluting fossil fuel with another. The decision on managing electricity demand and increasing renewable supply ultimately rests with local leadership in Orange County and Orlando.
