A massive 262-ton transformer, which originated in South Korea, has been delivered to the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. This delivery is a significant milestone in Constellation Energy's $1.6 billion project to restart the facility's Unit 1 reactor, rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center, targeting a mid-2027 operational date. The transformer will upgrade the plant's voltage from 23,000 to 230,000 volts, enabling it to connect to the regional power grid managed by PJM.

Constellation Energy Chief Generation Officer Bryan Hanson stated that the plant, which was shut down in 2019 for economic reasons, remains robust and is undergoing necessary corrective work for its restart. The project is crucially tied to a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft. This agreement is designed to fulfill the electricity demands of a data center project located in Virginia, while simultaneously enhancing the power supply to the broader regional grid.

Rob Altenburg of PennEnvironment commented on the project's potential to help meet the increasing electricity needs stemming from data centers and the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. The restarted facility is anticipated to inject 835 megawatts of power into the grid, addressing what Altenburg identified as a broader regional challenge of supplying large electricity consumers. He emphasized the necessity of bringing new energy sources, including green options, onto the grid to manage this escalating demand.
