Charlotte Residents Push City Council to Extend Data Center Moratorium
Charlotte residents spoke at a public hearing as the City Council considers extending its 150-day moratorium on new data center applications and development. The moratorium expires Nov. 5, and the council is scheduled to vote Oct. 22 on extending it through October 2027.
More than 30 residents representing opposing sides of Charlotte's data center debate spoke at an Oct. 12 public hearing. The city imposed a 150-day moratorium in June, temporarily halting new data center applications and development while staff and a task force studied potential regulations and environmental concerns.
The moratorium is set to expire Nov. 5. Charlotte City Council is scheduled to vote Oct. 22 on whether to extend it through October 2027. Cristopher Scalise, a former city task force member, urged residents to remain engaged, while resident Rev. Dr. Janet Garner Mullins said the pause should support informed development rather than permanently stop progress.
