Residents protest University of Michigan data center project
Residents of Ypsilanti Township protested a proposed University of Michigan-backed data center, arguing that the planning process lacked transparency and did not give neighbors enough opportunity to comment. The university held a second town hall to address concerns about the project, including electricity and water availability.
Ypsilanti Township residents protested a proposed computing center backed by the University of Michigan to support researchers and students. Neighbors said they first learned about the project through local reporting and were not given sufficient opportunities to weigh in during the planning process.
The university held a second town hall with residents, local leaders and independent experts after protesters criticized the project’s transparency. Some residents questioned the university’s explanation that Ann Arbor lacked enough electricity and water for data centers, while the university said it would continue working with the community as plans develop.
