U.S. Rep. André Carson (D-Indiana) announced on Wednesday the introduction of two bills in Congress aimed at regulating the artificial intelligence (AI) data center industry across the United States. The first piece of legislation, titled the "AI Data Center Moratorium Act," is co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). This bill seeks to halt the construction of any new AI data centers until sufficient precautions and "common-sense protections" can be guaranteed, according to Representative Carson.

The second bill, named the "AI Data Center Site Selection Transparency Act," would mandate that AI data centers provide transparency regarding their site selection processes. It also requires that local communities have input on any proposed new development.
