The 93-year-old artist, who still owns property in Abbott, condemned the projects for potential noise, water consumption, and light pollution, urging fellow Texans to "fight against data centers invading our land.
His comments come amidst significant statewide backlash against plans for nearly 250 data centers across Texas, including 56 in Central Texas. This public outcry has prompted Governor Greg Abbott to propose new industry regulations, including the repeal of data center sales tax exemptions and a ban on development in rural areas, marking a shift from his previous pro-AI development stance. Hill County, where Abbott is situated, previously enacted a one-year data center moratorium in May, but it was lifted in June after a developer filed a $100 million lawsuit against the county. Hill County ultimately settled the lawsuit for $100,000 in attorney's fees and adopted a revised industrial development review policy. The city of San Marcos has also implemented a citywide data center ban using zoning laws.
