The Sangamon County Board is poised to revisit a contentious data center proposal near Waverly, Illinois, on Tuesday night, following its tabling several weeks ago. The project, spearheaded by CyrusOne, has ignited significant local opposition, with protesters from groups like 50501 Springfield, associated with "No Kings" demonstrations, gathering outside the Springfield Sangamon Growth Alliance (SSGA) office. The SSGA has emerged as a primary proponent of the data center, engaging in extensive outreach, including text messages and digital ads, to highlight potential labor opportunities. SSGA CEO Ryan McCrady emphasized on the WTAX Morning Newswatch that the alliance's support stems purely from the project's economic benefits, refuting claims of financial incentives for the Growth Alliance. Opponents raise concerns about the longevity of construction jobs, the limited number of permanent roles within data centers, and the project's potential environmental impact. Bradd Houtt, Director of Location & Power Strategy for CyrusOne, addressed these concerns, stating that the company has incorporated lessons from past projects into the design, including barriers to mitigate noise from chillers and generators. McCrady also countered fears of CyrusOne abandoning the area, asserting the company's long-term commitment to communities. Broader concerns regarding the strain on the power grid have also been voiced, with Governor JB Pritzker previously suggesting that such developments should contribute their fair share to utility costs rather than receiving preferential treatment. The highly anticipated Sangamon County Board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bank of Springfield, relocated to accommodate an expected large public turnout.
