Atlanta City Council stalls data center task force proposal as mayor plans strategy group
The Atlanta City Council stalled a proposed data center task force resolution by Council member Kelsea Bond after Mayor Andre Dickens announced his own data center strategy group. Council members expressed concerns about duplicating efforts and decided to pause Bond's resolution to reconcile the two proposals. Both efforts aim to examine the impacts, location, and regulation of data centers in response to growing public opposition.
The Atlanta City Council temporarily halted a proposed data center task force, led by Council member Kelsea Bond, to address the impacts of data centers in the city. This decision came shortly after Mayor Andre Dickens unveiled plans for his own data center strategy group, prompting council members to express concerns about redundant efforts.
Council member Alex Wan, among others, advocated for a pause on Bond's resolution to allow for reconciliation between the two initiatives. Mayor Dickens has set an internal deadline of October 30 for his strategy group's initial work. The push for a task force stems from increasing opposition to a potential data center in Adair Park and broader community concerns.
Kelsea Bond emphasized the responsibility of local policymakers to understand the risks posed by rapid data center expansion, including impacts on electric grid capacity, water supply, noise, utility bills, the environment, and public health. She highlighted that data center developers and technology companies are actively lobbying local governments for approvals.
Bond's proposed task force sought to include representatives from various city departments, including the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience, the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation, and Atlanta City Planning, alongside environmental and public health experts. Council member Wayne Martin stressed the need for a public and robust conversation to address both the negative impacts and innovations in data center development.
