The Hopkinton Town Council adopted an ordinance prohibiting data centers in every zoning district in the Rhode Island town. The measure followed public comments about data centers' energy and water use, limited job creation, and potential effects on local infrastructure, though one resident argued that stricter rules could bring tax revenue and other benefits.

The Hopkinton Town Council adopted an ordinance banning data centers in all zoning districts after closing a public hearing and voting on the measure. Sponsored by Councilors Michael Geary and Robert Burns, the ordinance defines data centers as a distinct land use and lists them as prohibited throughout the town. The Planning Board revised the proposal and voted unanimously to support it.

Residents offered both support and opposition during the hearing. Critics cited energy and water consumption and questioned the number of permanent jobs data centers would create, while another resident said the town could permit facilities under strict conditions in exchange for tax revenue and infrastructure improvements. The council approved the ordinance by voice vote, while noting that a future council could amend it.
