The AI Energy Conference held at Southpointe's Hilton Garden Inn in Cecil, Pennsylvania, convened experts to discuss the rapidly evolving landscape of data centers, particularly those fueling artificial intelligence. Brian Gallagher of Steptoe and Johnson highlighted the unpredictable nature of future data center technology, noting the rapid changes in recent years. The conference, organized by Shale Directories, included a panel on community responses to data centers, moderated by Jeff Kotula, president and CEO of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Promotion Agency.
Washington County, Pennsylvania, has become a focal point for debates over data center development, mirroring a national trend where residents voice strong opposition due to concerns about environmental impact, significant electricity and water consumption, and potential increases in utility bills. A recent Gallup poll indicated that only 7% of respondents strongly favored data center construction in their communities, while 71% were either strongly or somewhat opposed.
Panelists Gallagher and Mark Vandegrift, president and CEO of Innis Maggiore, contended that many community worries are based on misinformation. They emphasized the need for data center companies to provide honest information, address local concerns seriously, and prioritize community relations, an area Gallagher admitted companies have sometimes neglected. Other notable speakers at the conference included Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi and Kevin Miller, commercial development officer for Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick.
