Amazon backs out of planned data center proposal
Amazon has withdrawn plans to build four data centers on the former George Washington University campus in Ashburn after residents opposed the proposal. Under a deal with Loudoun County, the site will instead be rezoned for mixed-use development, including housing, an arts center and an indoor sports complex, with Amazon contributing $5 million to the county’s housing fund.
Amazon has abandoned its proposal for four data centers at the former George Washington University campus in Ashburn following opposition from nearby residents. The company said it listened to community concerns and reached an agreement with Loudoun County to pursue mixed-use development instead of data centers.
The revised plans call for housing, an arts center and an indoor sports complex. Amazon, which purchased the property for $427 million earlier in the year, will also contribute $5 million to the county’s housing fund. The site is expected to be rezoned for housing and related mixed uses.
