The Kline Township Planning Commission has unanimously recommended a set of conditions for Amazon's proposed data center campus, following its fourth hearing on the project. The decision now rests with the township supervisors, who are scheduled to vote on Wednesday.
The proposed Amazon data center campus would encompass nine buildings across approximately 380 acres, located between Haddock and Lofty Roads and Interstate 81. Keystone Engineering's zoning officer affirmed that the project aligns with current zoning ordinances.
Despite the commission's recommendation, residents voiced significant concerns, primarily regarding noise from the 24/7 facility, electromagnetic fields, and vibration. Amazon stated it could not provide exact noise levels due to environmental variables. Residents also questioned the project's prior involvement in the governor's Fast Track program, which was later amended to exclude data centers.
Amazon agreed to the proposed conditions, which include third-party noise monitoring with additional mitigation if limits are surpassed, fire and emergency response requirements, environmental safeguards, and financial responsibility for electrical infrastructure. The commission's recommendation includes a desire to remain involved in the process.
