Mitch Jones of Food and Water Watch advocates for a national moratorium on AI data center construction due to their significant energy and water consumption. He highlights that these facilities are increasing electricity bills and contributing to the climate crisis, leading several state legislatures and Senator Bernie Sanders to also call for a pause.

Mitch Jones, representing Food and Water Watch, has issued a strong call for a national moratorium on the construction of artificial intelligence data centers across the United States. Jones argues that the rapid expansion of these facilities is unsustainable, particularly due to their high energy and water demands. He points to research from his organization, which predicts that AI data centers could consume up to 12% of the total national energy demand in the coming years, equivalent to powering more than 55 million households.
According to Jones, this extreme surge in energy consumption, largely powered by fossil fuels, is already having severe environmental and climate impacts, leading to inflated electricity bills for American households. He warns that the largest of these projects can consume as much power as 2 million households, contributing to the climate crisis and more violent weather patterns.
The call for a pause in AI data center development is echoed by several state legislatures and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who share concerns about the economic and environmental consequences. They also cite worries about potential job displacement for working people and the broader societal implications of superintelligence, reinforcing the need for immediate action to address the industry's rapid growth.
