Plainfield extends its moratorium on data centers
Plainfield trustees unanimously extended the village's moratorium on data center proposals for another 180 days. The extension gives officials more time to monitor state legislation and develop land-use, infrastructure and regulatory rules for future data centers.
Plainfield, Illinois, has extended its pause on data center and related warehouse applications by 180 days. Village trustees approved the extension unanimously as officials continue preparing a new Unified Development Ordinance tailored to the land-use and infrastructure impacts of data centers.
Village Administrator Joshua Blakemore said the ordinance could be ready in late winter or early spring 2027. Mayor John Argoudelis said the village wants to avoid rushing into development while state lawmakers consider potential requirements for data centers to provide their own power. The moratorium follows strong resident opposition to projects approved in neighboring Joliet and Yorkville, where access to electrical infrastructure has supported development.
