Vineland data center allegedly operates gas generators
Residents in Vineland, New Jersey, are concerned after a data center developed by DataOne for the Nebius Group, and linked to Microsoft, was accused of operating natural gas generators without a permit. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) observed natural gas power-generating equipment during an inspection and is requesting more information. This comes after DataOne previously received stop-work notices for unapproved construction related to an LNG tank and fuel cells.
Vineland, New Jersey, residents are demanding answers regarding a controversial 300-megawatt AI data center, developed by DataOne for the Nebius Group as part of a $17 billion deal with Microsoft, which is allegedly operating natural gas-powered generators without the required permits.
Thermal drone images published by the media outlet Floodlight depicted the facility using power-generating equipment. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) confirmed observing such equipment during a July 29 inspection and noted that DataOne has neither a permit for these generators nor an application submitted. The DEP has requested additional information from the facility to determine compliance.
This incident follows earlier stop-work notices issued to DataOne for beginning construction of a liquefied natural gas tank and fuel cell units without city approval. Residents, led by Zac Landicini, a local activist, have voiced strong opposition, citing concerns about air emissions from the natural gas engines and a perceived disregard for regulatory processes by the developers.
Despite the ongoing permitting issues for generators and some construction, the Vineland planning board had previously approved initial phases, including a second phase making way for the LNG tank and fuel cell units. DataOne has not yet responded to requests for comment.
