New zoning rules pass in Cascade Township; neighbors weigh what comes next

Cascade Township voters in Michigan narrowly approved updated zoning rules in a recent election, with 3,727 votes in favor and 3,560 opposed. The new ordinance replaces an existing one from 1989 and includes provisions for higher-density development in the village core and restrictions on homes along private roads.

Opponents of the new rules, who successfully placed the ordinance on the ballot after its initial passage by the township earlier this year, argued that the changes would restrict property rights and hinder future housing and business growth. Sara Fazio, a Cascade neighbor and board of review member, expressed concerns that the rules could make it harder to attract young families and businesses, potentially impacting the school district. Conversely, supporters like Scot VanSolkema, a parks and pathways committee member, believe the ordinance promotes responsible growth and preserves community character.

Township Supervisor Grace Lesperance affirmed that the election results align with leadership's vision to preserve Cascade's character and enhance residents' quality of life. Lesperance also noted that while the new rules apply to future growth, subsequent changes to the ordinance will be necessary, specifically to include regulations for data centers and crypto mining facilities. She confirmed that a "legal pause" currently prevents any new developments related to data centers or crypto mining facilities from moving forward.
