The Lowell Township Planning Commission is scheduled to meet tonight to continue discussions regarding a proposed hyperscale data center by Microsoft. The meeting comes one month after the township board controversially rejected a six-month moratorium on future data center votes, a decision that drew boos from a large crowd and has since led to a petition to recall three of the commissioners.

Microsoft aims to build its data center on a 237-acre site on Alden Nash Avenue near I-96, but the project requires rezoning approval from the township board to proceed. Residents have voiced significant concerns about the potential environmental impacts of data centers on the community. In response, Microsoft submitted a letter to the commission outlining 14 points to address these issues, including pledges to limit noise, incorporate water-efficient designs, and cover all electricity costs.

While a discussion with Microsoft about the data center is confirmed for tonight's agenda at the Grand Agricultural Center of West Michigan, it remains unclear if a vote will take place. Aaron Sullivan of 13 ON YOUR SIDE reported live on the ongoing debate.
