An electrical fault on a transmission line in Ashburn, Virginia, last week prompted several data centers to disconnect from the main grid and switch to backup power, temporarily removing 3,000 megawatts of load. This event raised concerns about the reliability of the power grid, with reports of lights flickering across Northern Virginia and as far as Chicago, according to Reuters.

Alan Cooper, CEO & Co-Founder of ON.energy, emphasized the potential for a "rolling blackout scenario" if the grid experiences such volatility, although he noted that data centers are investing heavily in technologies to enhance grid safety. Both PJM, the organization overseeing electricity movement in 13 states and D.C., and Dominion Energy confirmed that system protections functioned as intended, stabilizing the situation within minutes and preventing serious problems.

Amazon Web Services, a major data center operator in Loudoun County, stated its facilities transitioned to backup power as designed, preventing customer impact, and stressed that its data centers did not cause the initial transmission line issue. PJM is now collaborating with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) on a "Large Loads Action Plan" to develop standards for grid reliability amidst increasing power demands from large consumers like data centers.
