Bourbonnais officials have enacted a one-year moratorium on data center construction in the village, citing resident concerns and the need to develop new regulations. The decision came after significant public feedback and discussions within the Economic and Community Development Committee and Planning and Zoning Board. This pause allows the village time to create or amend ordinances regarding data center development.

Bourbonnais officials have unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on the construction of data centers within the village, effective immediately. The decision, made during an Economic and Community Development meeting, gives the village time to prepare and enact new legislation and zoning ordinances to address concerns related to data center development. Mayor Jeff Keast and Administrator Mike Van Mill emphasized that the village is not in favor of locating data centers in Bourbonnais, a sentiment echoed by approximately 100 residents who attended a recent board meeting.

The moratorium, which Keast described as a "pause button," was prompted by strong community opposition and the need to tighten existing zoning ordinances for such projects. Village Clerk Chad Meents and Trustees Randy King and Craig Toepfer were present for the discussion. Van Mill stated that local governments use moratoriums to gain "breathing room" to analyze the direction they want to take on important matters.

Mayor Keast expressed frustration with state officials, including Gov. JB Pritzker, asserting that the state is undermining local authority. He stressed the importance of local control in protecting the safety and health of residents. The trustees are scheduled to vote on proposed legislation at an upcoming board meeting, which will outline the framework for future data center regulations after the moratorium expires.
