Landrum council approves annexation, moves forward with data center moratorium
Landrum City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to establish a temporary moratorium on data center development within the city. This preventative measure allows the city time to review its comprehensive plan and zoning regulations, as no data center proposals have yet been received. The council also approved the annexation of the 183-acre Frolich property, designating it with an Agricultural zoning classification.
The Landrum City Council recently voted to approve the first reading of a temporary moratorium on data center development, a proactive step as the city reviews its comprehensive plan and zoning regulations. Deputy City Administrator April Williams clarified that this action is purely preventative, as Landrum has not yet received any proposals or expressions of interest for data center projects. The moratorium will return for a second reading at the September regular meeting.
In addition to the moratorium, the council approved the annexation of the 183-acre Frolich property, located at 400 High Farm Road. This parcel, held by a land bank operated by the Open Space Institute, is slated for a perpetual conservation easement. Mayor Bob Briggs highlighted the significance of preserving the large tract from future development, envisioning it as a potential asset for the city through parks and recreational opportunities.
During the meeting, the council also approved an ordinance to assign an Agricultural zoning classification to the newly annexed Frolich property. Furthermore, an amendment was approved on its first reading to standardize the meeting schedules for the city's Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, aiming to improve communication and efficiency for residents and city staff.
