Mahomet Ends Talks With Clean Cloud Over Proposed Data Center
The Village of Mahomet ended discussions with Clean Cloud Energy over the proposed Rising Edge data center, meaning the developer would need to pursue approval through Champaign County if it continues with the project. Champaign County has enacted a moratorium on hyperscale data centers through April 2027 while it develops new zoning rules addressing impacts on residents, wildlife, water, electricity and roads.
The Village of Mahomet has ended annexation discussions with Clean Cloud Energy regarding its proposed Rising Edge data center. The project site southeast of the village limits falls under Champaign County zoning, so any future application would require approval from the Champaign County Board rather than Mahomet officials.
Champaign County Board President Jennifer Locke said the county has imposed a moratorium on hyperscale data centers through April 2027 while officials develop an ordinance with strict requirements. County officials are considering standards for noise, separation distances and protections for water, electricity, roads, residents and wildlife. Clean Cloud Energy said it would respect the county’s regulatory review and evaluate the project under the eventual framework, but county officials indicated development at the site is unlikely to be financially attractive under the proposed rules.
