Meta's massive $50 billion "Hyperion" data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is already making a substantial economic impact in the northeast region, even though it is still nearly four years from completion. Civic, governmental, and business leaders are touting the short-term benefits of the facility, which broke ground roughly 19 months ago.
Rob Cleveland, President and CEO of GrowNELA, the region's economic development agency, highlighted the immediate advantages. He noted a significant increase in sales tax collections, with the 10 parishes in the region bringing in over $383 million in sales tax in 2025, a rise of over $40 million. Cleveland also pointed to a specific investment by Base Technologies, a company specializing in data center work, which is investing $80 million and creating 200 new jobs in Ouachita Parish, a neighboring area. The overall project is expected to generate 7,500 construction jobs and approximately 1,000 permanent operational roles once complete.
Meta's "Hyperion" data center, near Holly Ridge along LA Highway 183, is designed to be a hyperscale facility spanning nearly 10 million square feet, with plans for up to 11 buildings and 10 gas turbine power plants. It is projected to offer an eventual 5 gigawatts of compute capacity. The project, expected to become operational in 2030 with final completion in 2032, is a key part of Meta's strategy to accelerate its AI progress and house its largest multi-gigawatt AI cluster for the emergence of superintelligence, as envisioned by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The economic ripple effect has also spurred residential development and growth in local businesses.
