Entergy says Meta will save ratepayers billions
Entergy Louisiana claims that its agreements with Meta for data center power will save existing ratepayers approximately $2 billion over two decades by spreading fixed costs and covering system-wide investments. However, consumer advocates like the Alliance for Affordable Energy and Union of Concerned Scientists argue these savings rely on optimistic assumptions and could vanish if costs rise or Meta's commitment changes. Entergy Louisiana projects that its agreements with large data center customers, particularly Meta, will result in substantial savings for existing ratepayers, estimating around $2 billion over 20 years. The utility explains that data centers will pay for the new infrastructure they require and contribute additional revenue, which will help cover shared expenses across Entergy’s existing system, effectively spreading fixed costs over a larger customer base.
Meta is also directly funding specific transmission facilities connecting its data center to the grid and has committed $300 million to Entergy Louisiana’s resilience program, $700 million toward past storm restoration costs, and over $1.5 billion for major transmission and generation upgrades beneficial to all customers.
