Meta announced a significant expansion of its data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, committing over $50 billion to increase its compute capacity to 5 gigawatts. This investment is positioned as one of the world's largest in AI infrastructure, aiming to establish the Louisiana site as one of the largest data centers globally. The project has already generated over $1.6 billion in contracts for Louisiana businesses since its groundbreaking in December 2024 and is projected to support more than 1,000 jobs.

Beyond direct economic impacts, Meta plans to invest over $1 billion in local infrastructure upgrades, including roads and water systems. The expansion also includes an energy agreement with Entergy Louisiana, which is expected to save the utility's customers more than $2 billion over two decades, with Meta covering the data center's energy, water, and infrastructure costs.

The data center's presence is already transforming Richland Parish, a rural community of approximately 20,000 residents, through increased tax revenue. Sheldon Jones, Superintendent of the Richland Parish School District, highlighted the "life-altering" impact of these funds, noting that teachers recently received annual bonuses of over $50,000, a substantial increase from the previous $10,000, which has also aided in attracting stronger teacher candidates.
