Sen. Jon Husted said local governments should decide whether to approve data center construction and backed requiring data centers to pay for their power and infrastructure costs. The House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act, but the Senate rejected it amid disagreement over whether the standards would adequately protect surrounding communities and utility ratepayers.

Ohio Sen. Jon Husted discussed data center development and affordability during an interview with The National News Desk as he campaigns for reelection against former Sen. Sherrod Brown. Husted said local entities should determine whether data centers are built and cited legislation intended to make data centers cover their own power and infrastructure costs.

The House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act, which would have required states to consider standards for data centers to pay utility-related costs, but the Senate rejected it. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the proposal as insufficient, saying Democrats wanted mandatory requirements for data centers to cover costs imposed on surrounding communities.
