Social media giant Meta is expanding its Eagle Mountain Data Center in Utah, bringing its total investment in the area to over $3 billion. This significant expansion is coupled with substantial new investments in local schools and community projects.
The funding package includes $1.5 million for education and public amenities. Specifically, $600,000 has been donated to the Lake Mountain School District to purchase land for a future elementary school, providing a major head start for the newly formed district. Additionally, Meta is contributing $450,000 towards the future Walden Park Observatory, offering stargazing and science education opportunities for local families and students. City representatives highlighted Meta's ongoing investments over eight years, including hydroponic systems at Cedar Valley High School.
Despite the positive community investments, the expansion addresses the controversial reputation often associated with data centers. Meta is actively tackling concerns regarding water, housing, and energy. The company claims to have invested in multiple water restoration projects, returning over 726 million gallons of water to the local watershed through initiatives like the Provo River Flow Restoration Project and Hobble Creek Flow Restoration. Meta also commits to matching its operations with 100% clean and renewable energy. Furthermore, the company has donated $4.85 million to Eagle Mountain's affordable housing fund, assisting local families with homeownership, which city leaders credit as a significant help.
