Data center activists from across the state rally against Project Jupiter
Data center activists from across New Mexico rallied in Las Cruces against Project Jupiter and other hyperscale data center proposals. Organizers called for a statewide ban, citing concerns about water use, air quality, land impacts and public investment priorities.
Youth United for Climate Crisis Action hosted a three-day gathering and rally in Las Cruces for data center opponents from across New Mexico. Campaign organizer Jonathan Juarez said billions being invested in data centers should instead support schools, hospitals and community resources, while emphasizing concerns about clean air and water.
The protest focused on Project Jupiter, for which Doña Ana County commissioners approved a $165 billion industrial revenue bond package last year. YUCCA policy manager Esperanza Chairez said organizers from Stop Project Jupiter and Fight Chihuahuan Desert Extraction want a statewide ban on data centers, citing proposals in Doña Ana, Lee, Raton and Sierra counties. A statewide student walkout was also expected to protest data center development.
