Community concerns have arisen in Newport News, Virginia, following the groundbreaking of what is labeled the "Jefferson Lab Data Center." Local resident Amanda Doughty has been vocal in dispelling rumors that the facility is a large-scale commercial data center, noting public confusion stemming from signage explicitly stating "data center" and insufficient information regarding its actual purpose.

Last month, city, state, and federal leaders participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the project. However, officials, including local Congressman Rob Wittman, have since clarified that the term "data center" is somewhat inaccurate for this particular development. A spokesperson for Jefferson Lab further stated that the facility is not a traditional commercial data center, but rather a "first-of-its-kind national scientific infrastructure investment" designed to connect researchers, data, advanced computing, and artificial intelligence across the Department of Energy's research network.

To address ongoing community questions and alleviate concerns, a town hall meeting is scheduled for July 28th at the Denbigh Community Center. While Doughty has met with project stakeholders and feels "a little bit better," she still has questions she hopes will be answered at the upcoming meeting.
