Meta announced a new $1 billion "Future Is for Everyone Fund" to invest in communities where it operates or is developing data centers, with Montgomery, Alabama, being a key beneficiary. This fund aims to support locally identified priorities, including schools, teachers, first responders, and critical energy and water infrastructure.
The initiative is described by Meta as part of a "community compact" that ensures host communities directly benefit from AI infrastructure investments. CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted a vision for open-source AI and sustainable development, which should include high-paying local jobs, investments in public services, stable energy costs, and environmental protection. The fund was partly inspired by Meta's experience in Richland Parish, Louisiana, where a data center investment led to significant tax revenue benefiting local teachers.
In Alabama, Meta is expanding its Montgomery data center, increasing its total investment to over $1.5 billion for a campus expected to exceed 1.3 million square feet. This project will create more than 100 permanent operational jobs and approximately 1,500 construction jobs. Meta has also partnered with Montgomery Public Schools to enhance STEM education, robotics, and digital literacy. The fund's announcement coincides with Meta's release of new open-source AI models, reinforcing Zuckerberg's belief that open-source AI fosters innovation and prevents technological power concentration.
