Vermillion County commissioners reject data center moratorium in 2-1 vote
Vermillion County commissioners voted 2-1 to reject a proposed moratorium on data center development near Vermillion Rise Mega Park. Supporters said a pause was needed to give the county time to establish regulations, while commissioners said the county remains open to development and will continue working on an ordinance.
The Vermillion County Commissioners rejected a proposed moratorium on data center development surrounding Vermillion Rise Mega Park in a 2-1 vote. Commissioners Misty Hess and Bill Peebles opposed the measure, while Commission President R.J. Dunavan supported it.
A representative of the Vermillion County Area Plan Commission backed the moratorium as a way to give the county time to create regulations to protect the community. Dunavan said the county’s data center committee demonstrated openness to development while recognizing the need for rules, and officials said they may need to accelerate work on a data center ordinance after the moratorium failed.
