Protestors target proposed data center and power plant in Indiana County, Pennsylvania
Four advocacy groups protested a proposed Amazon data center and associated natural gas power plant in Burrell Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. They hung signs on a pedestrian bridge and are planning a rally to express concerns about land, air, water, and health impacts. Amazon is reportedly considering the Homer City Redevelopment site for the data center.
Four advocacy groups – Concerned Residents of Western PA, Unite Armstrong, Indiana County Common Good, and Pittsburgh Overpass Project – staged a protest on Sunday in Burrell Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The groups hung signs on the new Route 22 pedestrian bridge to demonstrate community opposition to a proposed data center and a natural gas-fueled power plant.
Signs included messages such as "No Data Centers," "No Amazon," and "People Over Profit." Danielle Morganti, a member of Indiana County Common Good, emphasized the importance of visible opposition to protect local land, air, water, and health.
The protest follows an announcement earlier this month that Amazon is considering the Homer City Redevelopment site for a future data center, which would be powered by energy from the new power plant. Concerned Residents of Western PA is also organizing an anti-data center rally for September 12th at IRMC Park in Indiana.
