The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council formally opposed hyperscale data center development on and near the southern portion of the Akwesasne Territory through Resolution 2026-41. The Tribe cited potential impacts involving energy use, water resources, air quality, noise, light pollution, health and cultural resources, while seeking consultation with state officials during New York's data center moratorium.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council adopted Resolution 2026-41 on Oct. 2, formally opposing hyperscale data center projects on or near the southern portion of the Akwesasne Territory. The council said its Tribal Task Force on Energy and Industry identified potential risks to the community's economy, environment, cultural resources and public health.
The Tribe cited concerns about high electricity consumption, water use, air-quality degradation, noise and light pollution. It also said it had met with representatives of the Town of Massena and urged the town not to authorize continued data center growth in the area. The council pointed to New York's state data center moratorium as an opportunity for consultation with Gov. Kathy Hochul's administration and other state officials.
