Data Center Noise Protest Colorado Springs
Opponents of Project Taurus, a proposed AI data center in Colorado Springs, held a noise demonstration to protest potential noise levels. They also raised concerns about water and electricity usage. The Colorado Springs City Council is set to hear appeals and public comments on the project.
Opponents of a proposed artificial intelligence data center, known as Project Taurus (or Thoris), in Colorado Springs staged a noise demonstration to highlight their concerns about potential sound pollution. The facility is planned for a former Intel chip manufacturing site. Residents fear the data center could generate noise levels of up to 90 decibels, significantly impacting the surrounding community.
Beyond noise, the protest also brought attention to worries regarding the project's demands on local water and electricity resources, as well as its overall location. While opponents presented a 90-decibel sound as a representation of their fears, the unnamed developer counters that their own studies estimate operations would be around 41 decibels, well below the city's 55-decibel limit.
The Colorado Springs City Council is scheduled to address the matter in an upcoming meeting, where they will hear two appeals related to the project. Public comment opportunities will be limited, with a cap of 120 speakers each allotted two minutes.
