Data center moratorium petition heads to Lubbock City Council
A petition seeking an 18-month moratorium on hyperscale data center development in Lubbock, Texas, has collected enough validated signatures and will now go before the Lubbock City Council. The effort was spearheaded by Stephen Sanders of Citizens of Lubbock Against Data Centers. If the council rejects the measure, it could be put to a public vote in November.
A petition initiated by Stephen Sanders, founder of Citizens of Lubbock Against Data Centers, has successfully gathered and validated enough signatures to compel the Lubbock City Council to consider an 18-month moratorium on hyperscale data center development within city limits. Approximately 3,000 residents supported the petition, which aims to pause new data center construction.
The city secretary confirmed the validity of the signatures, officially advancing the measure for review by the council. The Lubbock City Council is scheduled to deliberate on the proposed moratorium during its next regular meeting, set for Tuesday, June 25th.
If the City Council opts to vote down the moratorium, the initiative could then proceed to a public ballot for voters to decide in November.
