The Otoe County Planning Commission has voted to recommend a moratorium on data center construction within the county. The decision came after a significant public response, with many residents expressing concerns about the potential environmental and health impacts of data centers on their community.
Resident Wynne Benedict urged the commission to consider environmental and health impacts beyond just economic benefits. Mark Wurtele, a four-decade resident, stated that a data center would not be a good fit for Otoe County.
Conversely, Lisa Walker, representing the Nebraska City Area Economic Development, warned that a moratorium could signal that Otoe County is unwelcoming to new businesses, potentially closing the door on future opportunities.
The recommendation now moves to the Otoe County Board of Commissioners, who will hold an upcoming meeting to determine whether to enact the moratorium.
