Meta has committed to significant infrastructure upgrades and is exempt from state and local taxes.
Meta has announced a significant expansion of its data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, doubling its planned size. The tech giant, parent company of Facebook, now intends to invest approximately $50 billion into the facility, a substantial increase from the initial $10 billion announced last year. Construction on the data center commenced in 2023.
The expanded project is projected to generate about 7,500 construction jobs and, once operational, will create around 1,000 permanent positions. However, the development is also sparking concerns among local residents regarding its potential impacts on the environment, local quality of life, and demands on the power grid. In response, Meta has pledged $1 billion for local infrastructure upgrades and an additional $5 million to fund training programs for area residents. The company is also financing the construction of ten new power plants and 240 miles of new transmission lines to support the facility. In exchange for this investment, Meta has been granted an exemption from all state and local taxes.
