A reader letter argues that a data center could benefit Bemidji because northern Minnesota’s cooler climate may reduce cooling needs. The writer says such a facility would require substantial power but could bring jobs and strengthen the local electric network if paired with adequate generation capacity.

William Davidson, a San Diego resident and former data-center power-management entrepreneur, argues in a letter to the Bemidji Pioneer that Bemidji and northern Minnesota could be favorable locations for data centers. He says modern facilities may use closed-loop or air cooling, limiting water consumption, while still requiring large amounts of electricity, particularly for cooling.

Davidson also cites potential permanent jobs, construction and maintenance work for local trades, and benefits for regional utilities. He says the key issue for Bemidji would be whether a prospective facility provides enough generation capacity to improve the local grid’s capacity and resilience without raising electricity rates.
