Memphis City Council meeting to resume Thursday after data center protests
The Memphis City Council will resume debate after a meeting on proposed data center restrictions ended amid protests and physical confrontations. A moratorium that would halt new data centers and expansions remains under consideration, with a vote scheduled for Oct. 20.
The Memphis City Council is scheduled to resume discussions Thursday after a contentious meeting over several data center-related ordinances ended with shouting, shoving and fighting. Council members said the proposals require further discussion, while more than 200 people expressed frustration over the council's repeated delays.
Councilman JB Smiley said the proposed moratorium has been before the council for at least six weeks and would stop new data centers and expansions of existing facilities, but would not affect currently operating sites. Councilwoman Janika White said the vote remains scheduled for Oct. 20, as tensions continue between supporters and opponents of the measure.
