Rockford data center framework moves forward despite lone opposition
The Rockford City Council voted 11-1 to advance a proposed framework regulating data centers to the Zoning Board of Appeals for public hearings. The framework would address data center definitions, noise, water supply, and energy consumption, while Alderwoman Gina Meeks opposed advancing it before the regulations were finalized.
The Rockford City Council voted 11-1 to move forward with a proposed data center framework, sending it to the Rockford Zoning Board of Appeals for public hearings in November. The proposal would define data centers and require developers to comply with noise rules while addressing water supply and energy consumption on a site-specific basis.
Alderwoman Gina Meeks cast the lone dissenting vote. She said the framework remained a work in progress and argued that regulations should be more firmly established before the proposal advances through the public process. Other aldermen indicated that public hearings would provide an opportunity for stakeholders and residents to suggest changes.
