QTS Data Centers has announced a $5 million pledge for workforce development in Eastern Iowa. The investment is intended to support high school and community college trade programs and foster partnerships with local unions to train the next generation of skilled workers.

The initiative comes as thousands of tradespeople are currently working to make the QTS data center on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids operational. Jebediah Novak highlighted the growing demand for well-trained tradespeople, a trend expected to continue over the next decade. Iowa is projected to add nearly 6,000 construction jobs in the next eight years.

QTS currently has about 4,500 people on-site daily for construction. Upon completion, the data center is expected to create 100-120 permanent jobs, with Tag Greason noting that for every QTS job, there are typically five indirect jobs related to equipment maintenance and engineering work. The company hopes this investment will strengthen Eastern Iowa's workforce by ensuring educational programs remain affordable and accessible. Reporter Jocelyn Peshia provided details on the new grant.
