Google has agreed to purchase 3,590 megawatts of electricity from Constellation Energy through long-term power contracts, including 890 megawatts from upgraded nuclear reactors and an additional 2,700 megawatts from Constellation’s generating fleet. Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion to increase capacity at 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with the first upgraded facility expected to deliver power in 2028.

The agreement is intended to support Google’s expanding data center operations amid rising electricity demand and tightening capacity in the PJM Interconnection grid. It follows PJM’s proposal that large data center customers provide their own power or accept possible remote shutoffs during periods of peak demand, and the companies described the arrangement as a model for future investments in generation, storage and demand-response systems.
