Cheek sworn in, faces short agenda in first meeting
Mocksville residents Sarah Weschler and Jeff Plott urged the town to adopt stronger zoning standards or a moratorium before allowing a potential data center. National Land Developers is considering a site near U.S. 64 East and Bethel Church Road, while Mayor Will Marklin has said the town would approve a zoning change if the project meets current regulations.
Neal Cheek was sworn in to the Mocksville Board of Commissioners on Oct. 5, replacing former commissioner Rob Taylor. The board approved an economic incentive for Aluma-Form, infrastructure contracts and the town’s 2025 Water Supply Plan during the meeting.
Public commenters Sarah Weschler and Jeff Plott criticized the town’s approach to a potential data center being considered by National Land Developers near U.S. 64 East and Bethel Church Road. They called for stricter zoning standards and a moratorium to evaluate possible health and environmental effects, arguing that industrial data centers should not be placed under existing industrial zoning without additional protections. Mayor Will Marklin has previously indicated the town would approve a zoning change if the project complies with current regulations.
