A massive 400,000-square-foot AI-focused data center, the Golden Valley Technology Hub, is proposed for 100 acres of former oilfield land near Elk Hills in Kern County, California. Developed by CRC, the project aims to support AI and cloud computing demands while generating economic development and jobs. CRC plans to use an existing, underutilized power plant for electricity and a closed-loop cooling system for water to address environmental concerns.

A large data center project, the Golden Valley Technology Hub, has been proposed for approximately 100 acres of former oilfield land near Elk Hills in Kern County, California. The facility is designed to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and other digital services, covering 400,000 square feet and including an electrical substation, office space, and parking areas.

Chris Gould, Managing Director of Carbon TerraVault at CRC, highlighted Kern County's suitability for data center development and emphasized the project's potential for significant economic development. While some residents, like Taft's Emmanuel Campos, initially expressed concerns but now see the project as an economic opportunity, critics remain worried about the demands large data centers place on local resources.

CRC has addressed these concerns by integrating solutions into the project's design. Gould stated that the facility would utilize an existing, underutilized power plant for its primary electricity, rather than connecting to the grid. For water consumption, a closed-loop cooling system will be implemented to recirculate water and reduce overall usage. The Golden Valley Technology Hub is currently in the proposal stage and requires additional reviews and regulatory approvals before construction can commence.
