A York County farmer, Jim Rexroth, is considering leasing his 541-acre Conewago Township farm for a potential data center, prompting strong opposition from local residents concerned about environmental impact and infrastructure strain. The township currently lacks specific ordinances for data centers, and Rexroth plans to speak at an upcoming planning commission meeting to encourage a collaborative discussion on the issue.

York County farmer Jim Rexroth's 541-acre property in Conewago Township has become the focal point of a community dispute over the potential development of a data center. Rexroth, who has helped preserve 1,500 acres across York County, stated that the idea for a data center on his class-three farmland arose after discussions about restarting a nuclear reactor on Three Mile Island, with companies approaching him due to the land's existing infrastructure, including electric, gas, fiber optic, and water access.
While acknowledging the economic benefits a data center could bring to himself, his family, and employees, Rexroth expressed his nuanced stance, stating he is "not pro data center" but is seeking to understand if it could be a mutually beneficial solution given the challenges of farming the difficult soil. However, the proposal has already generated significant pushback from neighbors, with dozens of anti-data center signs lining the roadways. Residents cite fears about environmental impact, increased strain on infrastructure, and concerns that past developments failed to deliver promised benefits.
Currently, Conewago Township lacks a specific ordinance for data centers, and the issue is not addressed in the updated multi-municipal comprehensive plan set for a vote next month. Rexroth plans to attend the township’s planning commission meeting on April 27, not to advocate for a specific project, but to initiate a constructive conversation with the community and local officials. Conewago Township officials were unavailable for comment regarding potential data center regulations.
