Ellendale, North Dakota Mayor Don Flaherty was interviewed regarding the Polaris Forge 1 data center, developed by Applied Digital, in his town. The Mayor explained that Ellendale's population had decreased from 1,800 in 1996 to 1,100 currently, a trend common in rural America. However, he anticipates a population growth of 400 to 600 over the next five to six years directly attributable to the data center's presence.
The Polaris Forge 1 facility is described as consisting of three buildings, spanning over 2 million square feet, and requiring 400 megawatts of power. While construction phases bring a temporary increase in workers, the project is projected to create approximately 300 to 350 permanent jobs. Mayor Flaherty expressed confidence that this data center will provide stable, long-term economic growth, differentiating it from the more volatile oil industry, and ensuring Ellendale remains a viable community well into the next century. The CEO of Applied Digital reportedly views Ellendale as a "launch pad for the future of AI infrastructure."
